Qualifying for a mortgage in today's market is a critical part of your home buying process. Step 1 is talking to a mortgage specialist to get pre-qualified or better yet pre-approved. This tells a seller that your offer is serious and gives you a better chance at getting your offer accepted. Some sellers won't even accept offers from buyers who are not pre-qualified.

Step 2 is selecting your property. Step 3 is formally applying for your mortgage usually within 5 days of your successful sales contract. If you already have a mortgage officer selected you are ahead of the process.
